Luciferianism is usually placed on the left-hand path, a term Western occultists took from the Sanskrit vamachara by way of Theosophy and then redefined. In its modern occult sense it means a path whose goal is the strengthening and eventual deification of the individual self, as against a right-hand path aimed at union with, or submission to, a higher being. Luciferian writing is explicit about this: the aim is self-mastery and apotheosis, not devotion.
The ritual technique is largely borrowed. Practitioners draw on the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn for ceremonial structure, on Crowley for terminology and for the emphasis on individual will, on the older grimoire literature for the summoning of spirits, and on general Western ceremonial magic for tools, circles and correspondences. What is distinctive is the framing rather than the mechanics. Ritual is presented as psychological and self-transformative work whose imagery is chosen for its effect on the practitioner, and even theistic Luciferians often describe the encounter with the being in those terms.
Organisation is thin. The best-known body is the one founded by Michael W. Ford in 2013 as the Greater Church of Lucifer and renamed the Assembly of Light Bearers, which briefly ran a public temple in the Houston area from 2015. Ford's books, including his set of Luciferian points of practice, function as the closest thing the movement has to a shared text, though no one is obliged to accept them. Other small groups exist in Europe and North America, several of them defunct or dormant, and a substantial number of self-identified Luciferians belong to nothing at all.
Because membership is informal and largely online, the size of the movement is unknown. Published figures come either from the groups themselves or from journalists relying on them, and none should be treated as a count. What can be said is that it is measured in thousands rather than in hundreds of thousands, and that its visible output consists of books, forums and small ritual groups rather than congregations.
