Distinct from, and Often Confused with, Satanism

Scholars of contemporary esotericism generally distinguish Luciferianism from Modern Satanism, discussed as its own separate entry in this atlas, since the two movements draw on different symbolic frameworks and are maintained by different, generally non-overlapping organizations and individuals, even though popular media and casual usage frequently conflate the two given their shared use of adversarial or oppositional Christian-derived imagery, a conflation practitioners of both traditions have separately pushed back against as inaccurate.

Luciferian practitioners and small organizations, to the extent they publish material at all, generally do so as individually authored and copyrighted work rather than as material intended for open collective liturgical use, reflecting the movement's generally more individualistic and philosophically oriented character compared to some more institutionally organized traditions in this atlas. This entry's general, non-reproductive treatment reflects both this internal diversity and the individually held intellectual property status of most specific published Luciferian ritual material, rather than any judgment about the movement's legitimacy as a genuine, if minority and often misunderstood, contemporary spiritual identity.
