Lupus's identity shifted from a generic wild beast into a specifically named wolf only in later, post-classical retellings, as its own article notes. Centuries before that renaming, in the spring of 1006 CE, this same patch of sky held one of the brightest stellar explosions ever recorded by human observers, watched independently across four unconnected civilisations.
SN 1006 is judged, from the surviving written accounts, to be the brightest stellar event in recorded history, reported as bright enough to cast shadows at night and, according to some accounts, to be read by. Astronomers and chroniclers in Song dynasty China, in Japan, in Iraq and Egypt under Islamic astronomy, and in monastic Europe all independently recorded a brilliant new light appearing in the southern sky and fading gradually over roughly two years, giving modern astronomers an unusually well corroborated historical record for identifying and dating the event centuries before photography or systematic astronomy existed anywhere.
Modern radio and X-ray telescopes have located the expanding remnant of that explosion still glowing in the same part of the sky, a shell of debris now roughly 60 light years across and still growing, definitively confirmed as the remains of the star four civilisations described within a few years of one another without any contact between them.
