The Federation's Own Arm, Running a Camp Since 1992

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

LWF World Service is the humanitarian and development arm of the Lutheran World Federation, the global communion of Lutheran churches founded at Lund, Sweden, in 1947, and it was established as that arm's dedicated department in 1952. It is a distinct organization from Lutheran World Relief, the separately incorporated relief and development agency jointly sponsored by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in the United States; the two share a Lutheran commitment to humanitarian work but answer to different governing bodies on different continents.

Part of what LWF World Service does is run a refugee camp. In 1992, with support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Kenyan government, LWF took over management of Kakuma Refugee Camp in northwestern Kenya, then a small trading post, to receive Sudanese refugees fleeing the Second Sudanese Civil War, among them sixteen thousand displaced and orphaned boys who became known as the Lost Boys of Sudan. Kakuma has since grown into one of Africa's largest refugee camps, home to more than 200,000 people, and LWF has run education, reception centre management, protection and livelihoods programs there ever since, work its own record extends to Dadaab refugee camp as well, standing today as UNHCR's ninth largest implementing partner worldwide.
