One Hundred and Fifty Two Doorways Into the Same Teaching

The Majjhima Nikaya, the Collection of Middle-length Discourses, is widely regarded among Buddhist scholars and practitioners alike as offering the richest single window into the substance of the Buddha's teaching, its 152 suttas long enough to develop an argument or a meditative instruction in real depth, yet compact enough to remain focused on a single occasion, question or interlocutor rather than sprawling across the more elaborate dramatic staging typical of the Digha Nikaya. Its suttas cover an unusually wide range of subjects and audiences, philosophical debates with wandering ascetics, detailed meditation instructions given to monks, ethical guidance for householders, and, in the Ariyapariyesana Sutta, one of the canon's few extended first person accounts attributed directly to the Buddha describing his own pre-enlightenment life, his departure from the palace, his period training under two meditation teachers he ultimately found insufficient, and his subsequent awakening under the bodhi tree.

Many of the collection's most cited individual suttas outside specialist circles come from here, including detailed accounts of the four jhanas, progressive meditative absorptions, and the Satipatthana Sutta on the four foundations of mindfulness, a text that has become foundational to the modern mindfulness meditation movement's own understanding of its Buddhist textual roots.
