The Verse That Justified, and the Verse That Doubted

Few passages in world scripture carry as much disputed later weight as the Purusha Sukta's varna verses, since traditional and much later Hindu social organization repeatedly invoked this single hymn as scriptural sanction for a division of society into priests, warriors, commoners and servants, a reading modern reformers, including B. R. Ambedkar and other 20th century critics of caste, forcefully rejected as either a late, self-interested interpolation serving priestly interests or a description twisted over centuries of practice far beyond anything the hymn's own cosmic, mythic register was meant to prescribe; the historical relationship between this Rig Vedic text and the elaborated caste system of later centuries remains a genuinely contested question among historians rather than a settled one.

The Nasadiya Sukta's open agnosticism about the origin of the universe has drawn admiration far outside Hindu tradition, cited by scientists, philosophers and comparative religion scholars alike as a strikingly early example of a religious text declining to claim certain knowledge about ultimate origins. Mandala 10's greater linguistic lateness relative to the family books is well established by internal grammatical evidence, and its broader thematic range, moving from cosmology to social order to grief and ordinary human vice, has made it, alongside Mandala 1, the part of the Rig Veda most read on its own terms by modern audiences approaching the text for its ideas rather than for liturgical use.
