Few manuscripts anywhere carry a name as immediately recognizable as the Blue Quran, and fewer still wear their uncertainty this openly. Parchment dyed a deep blue with indigo, its text laid down in gold leaf and picked out with silver, outlined carefully in ink, the manuscript was clearly made for a patron who wanted the Quran to look like nothing else being copied at the time. The Aga Khan Museum's own catalogue entry for its surviving folios, accession number AKM477, dates production to around 950 of the common era, very likely before 970, when the Fatimid caliphs relocated their capital from North Africa to Cairo. Where exactly it was made is a separate and less settled question. The museum's own record calls the origin uncertain, noting that individual pages have been attributed at different times to Iran, Iraq, Tunisia, Sicily and Spain, and while a North African origin near Kairouan is the attribution most often repeated, that repetition reflects where the bulk of the manuscript stayed for centuries rather than certainty about where it was first written.
Scholarship since Jonathan Bloom's reassessment has increasingly favored Fatimid North African production, arguing that the Ismaili Fatimid state, ruling from Ifriqiya before its move to Egypt, was the manuscript's patron. That case rests on dating and courtly context rather than any doctrinal content in the text itself, since the Blue Quran transmits the same Quranic text read across every Muslim community rather than anything specific to Ismaili teaching.
