The modern Lenormand card deck, thirty six small cards each combining a simple image, such as a ship, a bear or a coffin, with a playing card in the corner, is widely used across Europe today under her name. It is important to distinguish the historical woman from the deck: the Lenormand deck as it now exists was first published by the German game manufacturer Iwan Andreas Dondorf in 1846, three years after Lenormand's death, and there is no direct evidence she designed, used or endorsed that specific card set during her lifetime. The deck's publisher appears to have attached her already famous name to a game and divination system with roots in an earlier German fortune telling card tradition, a common commercial practice of the period.
Lenormand herself worked as a cartomancer using ordinary playing cards and published her own books, including a claimed memoir of Josephine, in her later career to capitalize on her fame. The atlas records both facts honestly: her genuine historical reputation as the most celebrated professional card reader of the Napoleonic era, and the separate, posthumous commercial origin of the specific card system that carries her name today.
Dondorf's deck combined earlier German card game traditions with the commercial appeal of Lenormand's already famous name, and it proved durable enough to remain the standard system still taught and sold under her name across Europe today, more than a century and a half after its first printing, an afterlife considerably longer than most nineteenth century commercial card games achieved.
