A Former President's Volunteer Work Brings Global Attention

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Habitat for Humanity International, the Christian housing ministry Millard Fuller founded with his wife Linda in 1976, gained international prominence it could not have achieved through its own founders' efforts alone once former United States President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn began volunteering their labor on Habitat build sites.

The Carters' involvement turned a nonprofit interdenominational housing ministry, built on the partnership housing model Fuller had developed at Koinonia Farm, into a widely recognized name well beyond the circle of families it directly served, drawing public attention and volunteers to a model of no-interest loans and shared labor that had begun as one community's local practice.

That visibility did not change the organization's underlying method. Habitat for Humanity continued building and repairing homes in partnership with families worldwide on the same terms Fuller had set from its 1976 founding near Americus, Georgia, sweat equity and no-interest financing rather than charity extended downward. What the Carters' volunteer work added was scale of attention, a global public profile for a housing ministry whose working method had already been fixed years before any former president ever picked up a hammer on one of its sites.
