Debate over Instrumentation In Nasheed

Islamic scholarly opinion has long differed, and continues to differ, on the permissibility and appropriate limits of musical instrumentation within nasheed and Islamic devotional music more broadly, with more conservative positions restricting acceptable accompaniment to unaccompanied voice or simple percussion such as the daf, on the grounds that melodic instruments carry a more contested religious status, while other scholars and communities accept a considerably wider range of instrumentation as consistent with devotional intent, provided the content and purpose of the song remain religiously appropriate.
