Naturopathy is less a single method than a philosophy for combining methods, built around the idea, vis medicatrix naturae, that the body has an inherent healing capacity that treatment should support rather than override. A naturopathic consultation typically covers diet, lifestyle, sleep, and stress at length, and a naturopath may then draw on any combination of nutritional counseling, botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, physical manipulation, homeopathy, and general lifestyle coaching, tailored to the individual patient rather than standardized to a diagnosis. Pharmaceutical drugs and surgery are generally treated as measures of last resort within the tradition, to be used only once gentler approaches have been tried, a stance that traces back to Benedict Lust's original framing of naturopathy against what he saw as the overly aggressive medicine of his own time.
This breadth is naturopathy's defining feature and its central practical problem. Because it functions as an umbrella for a wide range of underlying practices rather than one treatment, the evidence behind any given naturopathic recommendation depends entirely on which specific tool is being used: dietary and lifestyle counseling of the kind naturopaths commonly give overlaps substantially with mainstream preventive medicine and is often reasonable, while other frequently bundled elements, homeopathy in particular, have no support beyond placebo in controlled trials. Naturopathic doctors are licensed as primary care providers with prescribing rights in some jurisdictions and have no formal legal recognition at all in others, so what a patient receives under the naturopathy label, and what oversight governs it, varies enormously by where they live.
