Nichiren began inscribing the Gohonzon, a calligraphic mandala naming the Lotus Sutra's assembly of buddhas, bodhisattvas and protective deities around the daimoku at its center, during his exile on Sado Island beginning in 1271, a documented devotional object distinct from the remonstrances and persecutions his first article centers on. Where that first article follows the cost of his public declaration at Seicho-ji, the Gohonzon is what he gave practitioners to actually face in devotion once the declaration had been made, a documented practical object distinct from a doctrinal claim argued in writing to the shogunate.
He organized his mature teaching around three great secret laws, the daimoku chanted as Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, the Gohonzon inscribed as the object of that chant's devotion, and the kaidan, an ordination platform where the teaching would be formally established, a documented threefold structure distinct from the single scriptural claim, that the Lotus Sutra alone carries the complete teaching, that occupies his first article. Later schools tracing themselves to Nichiren built directly on this threefold structure in working out their own practice.
That the same teacher whose 1253 declaration and its cost, exile, attack and near execution his first article records also produced, from exile itself, an inscribed mandala and a threefold structure of chant, object and ordination platform that his later followers actually practiced, marks Nichiren's own devotional and institutional legacy as a documented case where persecution produced not silence but a concrete object his readers today can still hold.
