Ninigi's Descent: Two Mountains Named Takachiho

The Kojiki's account of Ninigi's descent from heaven, the Tenson Korin, names Takachiho as the peak where he arrived carrying the imperial regalia, but Donald Philippi's standard scholarly translation and modern Japanese tradition alike leave the exact mountain genuinely unsettled rather than agreed. Two separate locations in Kyushu claim the title today: Takachiho-no-Mine, a volcanic peak within Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park where a bronze replica of a sacred spear, Ame-no-Sakahoko, stands driven into the summit rock in memory of Ninigi's own descent, and Takachiho Gorge and the town of the same name in neighboring Miyazaki Prefecture, whose own tradition claims the same event for its own mountain. Coverage of the region published in 2026 describes the Miyazaki site's claim directly while naming the Kirishima peak the more visually dramatic of the two, a description that states the rivalry as a live, ongoing feature of how the two regions each tell the story rather than a settled question with one right answer. Neither claim can be adjudicated by the Kojiki's own text, which names Takachiho without the modern administrative precision that would resolve which of two places carrying the same ancient name it originally meant, so the rival tradition is best recorded as exactly what it is: a genuine and unresolved local disagreement over where Japan's founding myth of divine descent actually happened.
