The Sixteen Crowned Kingdoms

Yoruba dynastic tradition holds that Oduduwa's own children and grandchildren, rather than Oduduwa himself, carried his authority outward from Ile-Ife to found the other historic Yoruba kingdoms, each ruler receiving a crown understood to descend from Oduduwa's own. The traditional count names sixteen crowned kingdoms tracing themselves to Ife in this way, among them Oyo, whose ruling Alaafin lineage became the most powerful of Oduduwa's dynastic heirs during the Oyo Empire's rise, and the kingdom of Benin, whose royal tradition holds that its own ruling dynasty was reestablished by a prince sent from Ife after an earlier line failed, a claim that ties the Benin monarchy, a separate and non-Yoruba-speaking people culturally, into the same Oduduwa-descended framework. Not every Yoruba-speaking polity accepts the same account of its own place in this structure, and the number and membership of the sixteen crowns is itself a matter of local historical claim rather than a single fixed list agreed across all of them.

The wider effect of the tradition is structural rather than merely genealogical: crowned status, an oba entitled to wear a beaded crown carrying ase in the way described for the ade generally, is itself defined by traceable descent from Oduduwa, so the founding story functions as the source of a whole system of ranked legitimacy among Yoruba kingdoms rather than as an account of one city's own past alone.
