One Signal, Two Thousand Affiliates

A single owned station can only reach a single market, however large. Salem Media Group solved that limit for its Christian teaching and talk format the way most commercial radio companies eventually do, by building a syndication arm that reaches far beyond the stations the company itself owns. Salem Radio Network takes programming produced in house, along with content from outside ministries the network agrees to distribute, and sends it out to affiliate stations across the country that are not owned by Salem at all, only carrying its programming under a distribution agreement.

The scale of that distribution dwarfs Salem's own station count. The company owns and operates roughly seventy stations directly, concentrated in dozens of major markets, but the network built on top of those stations reaches thousands of additional affiliates that simply license and air Salem-produced or Salem-distributed content on their own local signals. Dr. James Dobson's Family Talk broadcast is one example, carried on numerous Salem-owned stations in major markets including New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Atlanta, even though Family Talk itself is produced by an entirely separate ministry Dobson founded after leaving Focus on the Family.

That distinction, between the stations Salem owns and the far larger network of affiliates it merely supplies, is what makes Salem Radio Network its own identifiable entity within the larger company. It is not a broadcast station and not a single program; it is the pipe through which Christian teaching and talk content, some produced by Salem and some produced by ministries Salem has no ownership stake in at all, reaches a national audience.
