A Court Office That Became a Global Video Game Franchise

Kyoto maintains a shrine dedicated specifically to Abe no Seimei, built on the traditional site of his residence, which functions today as both a place of worship and a significant tourist destination, drawing visitors who come as much for the legendary onmyoji's popular cultural fame as for any ongoing religious devotion, a modern afterlife the historical court office itself could never have anticipated.

Since the late twentieth century the figure of the onmyoji has become a major commercial property across popular media well beyond Japan, driven initially by Yumemakura Baku's novels reimagining Abe no Seimei and their film adaptations from 2001 onward, and more recently by video games, most prominently a mobile game published by the Chinese company NetEase that has drawn a large international player base with no particular background in Japanese history, so that the historical court diviner now reaches a global audience many times larger than the Heian bureaucracy he actually served, almost entirely through fictionalised entertainment rather than through any surviving religious institution.

The onmyoji operated within a specific institution of the ancient Japanese state, the Onmyoryo, or Bureau of Yin and Yang, established under the seventh century Ritsuryo legal codes that reorganised Japanese government on Chinese models, and the bureau combined the calendar office, an astronomical observation office and a divination office under one roof, so the onmyoji were, formally, civil servants within a specific ministry rather than independent diviners attached loosely to the court.
