Every Theme Read Twice, Once Light and Once Shadow

Oracle of Shadows and Light is a forty five card deck Lucy Cavendish created with artwork by Jasmine Becket-Griffith, first published in 2012. Its organizing system pairs each of its themes with both a shadow and a light aspect, framing difficult and constructive states as two readings of the same underlying energy rather than assigning each card a single fixed meaning. That paired structure is distinctive within Cavendish's own catalogue, which elsewhere, in The Faerytale Oracle and Wild Wisdom of the Faery Oracle among others, generally builds its cards around a cast of mythic figures rather than a light and shadow duality.

Read intuitively, with each card offering both readings for the querent to weigh against their situation, the deck reflects a wider pattern across Cavendish's decks of working with a single fantasy illustrator across a run of related titles, here Jasmine Becket-Griffith, whose large eyed figurative style also illustrates several of Cavendish's other decks published across the following years. Publishing a deck built specifically around paired opposite readings, rather than one meaning per card, is a less common structure within the oracle genre, closer to a working method than to the symbol catalogue format most other oracle decks use.
