Eighteen Visions That Made a Village a Shrine

Our Lady of Lourdes falls on the eleventh of February, the date this rule records, marking the anniversary of the first of a reported series of eighteen Marian apparitions to the fourteen year old Bernadette Soubirous at a grotto near Lourdes, in the south of France, beginning on this date in eighteen fifty eight. The apparitions were followed by the discovery of a spring at the grotto that quickly became associated with reports of healing, and the local bishop, after a formal investigation, recognized the apparitions as worthy of belief in eighteen sixty two, a comparatively swift process by the standards later Marian apparition inquiries would take.

Lourdes grew rapidly into one of the largest pilgrimage sites in the Catholic world, drawing millions of visitors annually, many specifically seeking healing at the grotto's waters, and the site's association with illness and healing eventually led Pope John Paul the Second to designate this date as the World Day of the Sick in nineteen ninety two, layering a second, more recent commemoration onto the older apparition feast. Pope Pius the Tenth later extended the feast to the universal Catholic calendar in nineteen oh seven, moving it from a purely local French devotion to one observed by the whole Church, and it remains a specifically Catholic date with no equivalent in Orthodox or Protestant observance.
