Pan-Orthodox by Design

Ancient Faith Radio carries an unusual structural tension by design. It is, formally, a division of Ancient Faith Ministries, an official department of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, one canonical jurisdiction among several that make up Orthodox Christianity in North America. Yet from its earliest years the station deliberately built itself as pan-Orthodox, drawing contributors and listeners from Greek, Russian, Orthodox Church in America, and other jurisdictions alike, rather than functioning as an in-house Antiochian broadcaster. The distinction mattered enough that when the ministry merged with Conciliar Press in 2008 and rebranded again in 2013 as Ancient Faith Ministries, the pan-Orthodox character of the radio division carried through both changes unaltered.

That openness shows in who the station reaches. A 2011 listener survey found converts to Orthodox Christianity outnumbering those raised in the Church nearly three to one, a striking ratio for a religious broadcaster whose own institutional home is one of the oldest patriarchates in Christianity. The ministry has since grown well beyond radio, adding Ancient Faith Publishing, an ebook platform, a film division launched in 2015 and a blog network from 2014, but the original pan-Orthodox radio station remains the anchor those later divisions were built around.
