Paul-Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran was born on 18 April 1838 in Cognac, France, into a family of wine merchants, and received no formal scientific education, being instructed instead by his mother and pursuing chemistry as an independent, largely self-taught interest from an early age. He developed considerable skill in spectroscopy, the analysis of the specific lines of light a heated substance emits or absorbs, using it to search systematically for new elements hidden within known minerals rather than relying on older chemical separation methods alone.
In 1875, examining a sample of zinc blende ore from the Pyrenees, Boisbaudran detected two previously unrecorded spectral lines, isolated a small quantity of a new metal, and announced its discovery to the French Academy of Sciences, naming it gallium after Gaul, the old Latin name for France. He went on to discover two further new elements using the same spectroscopic method, samarium in 1879 and dysprosium in 1886, becoming one of the most prolific individual element discoverers of the nineteenth century before his death on 28 May 1912.
His self-taught background gave his subsequent scientific standing an unusual character within the largely academically credentialed chemistry establishment of his era; contemporaries occasionally remarked on it, and Boisbaudran himself continued working largely independently, outside any major university laboratory, for the whole of his productive career. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1888, a formal recognition that placed him, a chemist with no university degree, among the most credentialed scientific body in France on the strength of his three element discoveries alone.
