One of Three Vessels Sharing a Root

Chinese medical theory treats the Penetrating, Conception and Governing Vessels as a related trio, all three said to arise from a common point in the lower abdomen before diverging to run their separate courses, the Conception Vessel along the front midline, the Governing Vessel along the back, and the Penetrating Vessel more internally, alongside the Kidney channel. That shared origin is used to explain why disorders in one of the three often present alongside disorders in the others, particularly in reproductive and lower-abdominal complaints.

Unlike the twelve regular channels, none of the eight extraordinary vessels including the Penetrating Vessel has acupuncture points entirely its own; treatment works instead through points on the regular channels that the vessel is said to pass through or connect with, a structural difference classical texts treat as central to understanding how the extraordinary vessels function within the wider system.
