A Rosicrucian Organizer Who Left What He Founded

Caddy's organizing instincts at Findhorn did not come from nowhere. Educated at Harrow School, he had belonged for years to the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship, an esoteric society whose structured approach to spiritual practice and community life shaped how he ran the growing settlement around his family's caravan. That structure is a large part of why a garden project turned into an organization at all rather than remaining an eccentric hobby: Caddy provided the practical direction, the outreach and the sense of a coherent community identity that let strangers arriving at Findhorn find a place inside it. He held that role through the 1960s and much of the 1970s as the community formalized into the Findhorn Foundation in 1972 and its membership grew well beyond the original three founding adults. Caddy left the community he had helped establish in 1979, a departure that separated him from the institution for the last fifteen years of his life; he died in a car crash in Germany on 18 February 1994, by then no longer resident at the settlement his own unemployment had accidentally started. That organizing capacity had a military pedigree too: Caddy served as an officer in the Royal Air Force's Catering Branch from 1940 to 1955, through the whole of the Second World War, before the Rosicrucian training and the hotel career that eventually led him to Findhorn.
