Condemned, Excommunicated, and Outside the Church for Four Centuries

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The lay preaching movement Peter Waldo began around 1173 was condemned for preaching without ecclesiastical authorization at the Third Lateran Council in 1179, a formal ruling against a practice, unauthorized lay preaching, rather than against Waldo's teaching of poverty itself.

That condemnation was followed by outright excommunication under Pope Lucius III by 1184, a rupture that pushed the Waldensian movement outside the institutional church for the next four centuries. Waldo's own death date is not firmly fixed in the surviving record, usually placed around 1205, so the movement continued underground for the great majority of that four century exile without its own founder still living to guide it.

The Waldensians survived that long exile and joined the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century once a wider movement existed outside Rome for them to align with. Their modern descendant united with Italian Methodism in 1975 to form the church this atlas holds today, so the 1179 and 1184 rulings against Waldo's own preaching mark the start of a separation the tradition did not formally resolve, by merging into a recognized Protestant body, for nearly eight hundred years.
