The first Pioneer Day commemoration was held in 1849, just two years after the company's arrival, and it became an annual fixture almost at once. Brigham Young used the occasion with evident intent: a community that had been driven from Nauvoo and had buried many of its own along the trail needed a founding date that ended in survival, and the early celebrations were substantial civic productions with orations, music and militia displays.
The day acquired a harder edge in 1857, when a celebration already under way in Big Cottonwood Canyon was interrupted by riders bringing news that a federal army was marching on the territory. The Utah War that followed, and the tension it set in Latter-day Saint memory between the valley and the federal government, has stayed attached to the anniversary ever since, even as the confrontation itself ended without the battle many feared.
Utah Territory made the day a legal holiday, and the designation carried forward automatically into statehood in 1896, giving Pioneer Day a civic standing that few religious commemorations anywhere in the country hold. The Days of 47 organization, formed in the 1930s specifically to run the Salt Lake City festivities, still produces the parade, and it was in the twentieth century that the pioneer trek reenactment was added as a youth activity, spreading well beyond Utah's borders and becoming, for many young Latter-day Saints who have never seen the valley, their most vivid connection to the anniversary itself.
