Authenticity and Scholarship

The manuscript is an authentic early-eighteenth-century document, and this must be stated precisely: it is not the pre-Columbian book but the earliest surviving copy, a bilingual transcription made by a colonial friar from an older Kiche source that is now lost. Its value is that the entire modern tradition of the Popol Vuh descends from this single witness; the translations by Dennis Tedlock, Allen Christenson and others all rest on the Ayer manuscript. The survival of one bound volume in Chicago is therefore the thread on which the text hangs, which is why its provenance and physical condition are matters of scholarly concern.

The Popol Vuh's authenticity as a genuine record of Kʼicheʼ Maya tradition is not seriously disputed by scholars, unlike several other manuscripts recorded in this atlas; the open questions concern transmission rather than fabrication. Because Ximenez's early eighteenth-century transcription is the earliest surviving witness, and the pre-contact oral or written material it drew on is lost, scholars cannot fully separate pre-Columbian content from possible colonial-era Christian influence on how that material was phrased or selected by the Kʼicheʼ nobles who supplied Ximenez's source and by Ximenez himself as a Dominican friar. Independent confirmation comes from Classic-period Maya art, made centuries before Ximenez, which depicts scenes, notably involving the Hero Twins, that correspond closely to episodes in the surviving text, evidence read as supporting genuine pre-Columbian continuity behind the colonial-era transcription.
