The Prithvi Mudra

Prithvi Mudra is a mudra, a symbolic hand-gesture of the Indian religious traditions, known in Sanskrit as Prithvi Mudra and signifying the seal of earth.

Form and meaning

In this seal the tip of the ring finger meets the tip of the thumb. Linked to the earth element, it is used in yogic practice to promote steadiness, grounding and physical strength.

Mudras appear across Hindu and Buddhist ritual, iconography, classical dance and yoga, where a fixed position of the hands carries a settled meaning or is held to direct attention and breath. The gesture is described here within those documented traditions.

Sources and caution

Prithvi Mudra, the ring finger and thumb tip pressed together while the other fingers extend, is presented within the same modern finger-element scheme as governing prithvi, earth, popularly associated with grounding and with strengthening the body's tissue and structure. The name draws on the same set of five classical tattvas, earth, water, fire, air and space, that also structure the Wu Xing-adjacent but historically unrelated Indian elemental cosmology found in Ayurveda and tantra; as with the other mudras in this modern set, the tattva concept is old, but the specific paired-finger gesture is a later systematisation rather than a documented ancient instruction.
