A Demiurge Without the Full Hostility of Some Gnostic Parallels

Buckley's scholarship on Mandaean texts notes that Ptahil, while structurally comparable to demiurge figures in other Gnostic systems, is generally treated with less outright hostility or condemnation than some parallel figures elsewhere in the wider Gnostic tradition; Ptahil is flawed and limited rather than actively malicious, acting under real, if lower, divine authorisation rather than in defiant rebellion against the Lightworld, which gives Mandaean cosmology a somewhat gentler, less starkly dualistic reading of the material world's imperfection than some other Gnostic systems that cast their demiurge in more purely negative or adversarial terms. This relatively moderate treatment of the demiurge figure is consistent with the broader ritual and cosmological structure of Mandaeism, in which the material world, though flawed, remains the site where saving knowledge, brought by Manda d-Hayyi and enacted through baptism, can genuinely take hold and lead a soul back toward the Lightworld, rather than a purely hostile prison to be simply escaped or rejected outright.
