Practice, Misunderstanding and Reach

Ritual life in Quimbanda centres on the terreiro, where mediums are trained to receive the Exus and Pombagiras through possession trance, amid drumming, song and the offering of food, drink and tobacco. Initiation binds the practitioner to particular spirits and to a ritual house and its hierarchy, and the work performed ranges from healing and protection to divination and the settling of disputes. Its close and contested relationship with Umbanda remains defining: many houses practise both, treating Umbanda and Quimbanda as complementary sides of a single religious world, while others keep them sharply apart.

Quimbanda has suffered from persistent stigma, from Catholic and Evangelical condemnation and from mid-century state and social repression of Afro-Brazilian religion, and its association with the Exus has made it a frequent target of the same prejudices long directed at African-derived traditions across the Americas. It is practised mainly in Brazil, with a growing presence in neighbouring countries and, through migration and more recent Western occult interest, beyond Latin America. Scholars situate it among the family of Afro-Brazilian religions alongside Umbanda and Candomble, and reliable membership figures are unavailable given its decentralised, initiatory and house-based organisation.
