What Testing Reflexology Has Found

Reflexology has been tested in a substantial number of small clinical trials over the past several decades, examining claims ranging from pain and anxiety relief to effects on specific organ function implied by its charts. A 2009 systematic review of randomized controlled trials by physician and researcher Edzard Ernst, surveying the accumulated trial literature, found no convincing evidence that reflexology is effective for any medical condition; where studies reported benefit, the trials were typically small, poorly blinded, or contradicted by better-designed studies, and the review noted that any relaxation or mood benefit reported was consistent with the general effect of calm, attentive touch rather than anything specific to the foot zones used.

A separate line of testing has targeted reflexology's core diagnostic premise directly, asking whether practitioners can correctly identify a client's known health conditions purely from examining the feet under blinded conditions; these tests have not found reflexologists performing better than chance. Because reflexology carries essentially no physical risk when practiced as a relaxation therapy, its main documented harm is indirect: delaying appropriate medical evaluation or treatment when it is used, or marketed, as a substitute for diagnosis or care rather than as a complementary comfort measure. Professional reflexology bodies in several countries now explicitly instruct members not to diagnose or claim to treat disease, a position that reflects the negative trial record even as the practice itself remains widely and legally offered as a wellness service.
