Relics, Altars And The Reliquary Niche's Liturgical Requirement

Church altars are traditionally required to contain or stand in close association with a relic, a requirement with roots in the ancient practice of celebrating the eucharist over the tombs of martyrs in the catacombs, and the reliquary niche is one of the standard architectural means by which later church builders continued to meet that requirement once churches were no longer built directly above an actual martyr's grave. Where an altar itself contains a small sealed cavity, the sepulchre, holding a tiny relic fragment enclosed at the altar's consecration, larger and more publicly venerated relics are typically instead given their own separate, visible reliquary niche elsewhere in the building, allowing the faithful to approach, view and pray before the relic directly in a way that a relic sealed invisibly inside the altar stone itself would not permit.

The architectural elaboration given to a reliquary niche often tracked the perceived importance and drawing power of the relic it held: major pilgrimage churches sometimes built genuinely monumental reliquary settings, integrated with the ambulatory and radiating chapels specifically to manage large numbers of visiting pilgrims, while a parish church's more modest relic of a locally venerated but less widely known saint might be housed in a comparatively simple wall niche, reflecting a real and visible hierarchy of relics within the wider architecture of Western Christian pilgrimage and devotion.
