Hakuin's Graduated Curriculum of Koan Introspection

The practice of working through assigned koans as the primary path to awakening reached its systematic modern form in the eighteenth century teacher Hakuin Ekaku, who organized what had been a looser and older Chinese Chan device into a graded curriculum still used in Rinzai training today. A koan, often translated as public case, is typically a short exchange or statement drawn from the recorded sayings of earlier Chan and Zen masters, given by a teacher to a single student as an object to hold in mind through daily life and through formal sitting, with the deliberate aim of exhausting ordinary logical analysis until it fails and a different mode of understanding breaks through. Hakuin's own approach involved assigning students an initial koan meant to shatter the discriminating mind before moving them through further cases addressing subtler points, a sequence intended to prevent a student from mistaking an early breakthrough for the whole of the training. Historians of Chan and Zen, including John McRae's study of the tradition's own account of its history, note that koan practice as Hakuin shaped it functions as much as an institutional credentialing system as a meditative technique, since a teacher's private interview, dokusan, is where a student's response to a case is tested and where progression through the curriculum is certified, a structure with no equivalent in Soto's goal free sitting.
