A Historian Among the Witches

Ronald Hutton was born in 1953 and trained as a historian of early modern Britain at Cambridge and Oxford, publishing conventional political and cultural history of the seventeenth century before turning, from the 1980s, to a subject almost no academic historian had taken seriously: the folklore, seasonal customs and modern Pagan religions of the British Isles. He has held a chair at the University of Bristol for most of his career and remains an active scholar, giving public lectures and publishing new work into the present.

What distinguishes Hutton's approach is that he applies to Paganism and witchcraft the same archival standards he would apply to any other period of British history, tracing claims to their earliest datable source rather than accepting inherited community tradition at face value. That method has made him an unusually trusted figure within the communities he studies, most of whom read his conclusions as a corrective delivered in good faith rather than as an attack from outside, even where his findings overturn cherished origin stories.
