Printed Long After the Curtain Fell

Historians do not agree on when the sacra rappresentazione began, and the disagreement is not a minor one about an exact year. One account credits a deliberate founding in 1440s Florence, tied to Cosimo de Medici the Elder and Archbishop Antoninus Pierozzi, prominent figures organizing a new form of civic devotional theatre on purpose. A second account instead traces the genre's real origin to the lauda dramatica, sung devotional poetry associated with the thirteenth century Umbrian poet Jacopone da Todi, which the scholar Mario Apollonio argued gradually took on dialogue and staged dramatic form generations before Florence adopted and refined it. Apollonio drew the line between the two forms on purpose rather than as a technicality: the lauda aimed at religious edification alone, he argued, while the sacra rappresentazione did not hide its own interest in spectacle for its own sake, a real difference in ambition rather than only in geography or date.

Whichever account is right about its beginning, the form's later life took an unusual path. Where the English mystery cycles survived chiefly as performance until the Reformation ended them and then largely disappeared from view, Florentine sacre rappresentazioni were also widely printed as cheap popular pamphlets and kept circulating as reading material long after live confraternity performance had declined, carrying the plays to readers who never saw a company stage one. Nerida Newbigin's 2021 study Making a Play for God draws on that printed record as much as on performance documents to reconstruct the surviving Florentine repertoire in full, the standard modern account of a tradition that outlived its own stage.
