A Seeker Becomes a Disciple, Then Founds His Own School

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati, born December 25, 1923, left home as a young man to seek a teacher, a search that led him to become a disciple of Swami Sivananda Saraswati at Sivananda's ashram in Rishikesh, where he was formally initiated into the monastic order. That discipleship gave him the grounding from which he would later build his own independent institution.

After years of wandering and teaching across India following his initiation, he founded the Bihar School of Yoga in Munger in 1963. The school became one of the first institutions to systematically teach yoga to Western as well as Indian students, and to frame the practice partly in terms accessible to modern physiology and psychology rather than purely traditional or devotional language.

That combination, a formal monastic lineage traced to Sivananda joined to a deliberately modernized and internationally oriented teaching institution, gave the Bihar School of Yoga a founding identity distinct from an ashram built solely around its founder's own charisma, positioning it instead as a systematic school with a curriculum meant to outlast any single teacher's presence in the room, run whether or not its founder himself was there to teach a given class.
