What It Looks Like, and What Became of It

A Seax-Wica coven is a small democratic body. Officers are elected annually, a coven can dissolve and reconstitute, and a solitary practitioner who has self-dedicated is a full member of the religion rather than a candidate for one. Alongside the priesthood there is a lay category, for people who honour the gods without taking a priestly role, a distinction most Wiccan traditions do not make, because most of them ordain everyone.

Ritual is published, plain, and short by the standards of the initiatory traditions. Divination uses a set of runic staves Buckland devised. Ritual nudity, which Gardner made central, is optional here and generally not practised.

Seax-Wica never became large, and its founder appears not to have minded. Its significance is as the first serious attempt from inside initiatory Wicca to publish a complete working tradition and hand it to strangers, and as the precedent for everything that followed. Buckland went on to write Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft in 1986, a mass-market manual that taught the religion to an enormous number of people who never met a coven, and which did more than any single initiatory lineage to determine what Wicca now looks like in practice.

In 2017 the United States Department of Defense recognised Seax-Wica as a distinct faith group for the purposes of service members' religious designation, a modest administrative fact, and a real one, in a country where recognition of pagan traditions has usually had to be litigated for.
