Testimony Without a Test
Second sight has never been converted into a controlled experimental claim the way telepathy and clairvoyance were by Rhine's laboratory. Its evidentiary base is entirely testimonial: local accounts, collected across three centuries, of a vision that was later matched to a death or misfortune, with no prospective protocol establishing in advance what a seer predicted before the event occurred. This is the same structural weakness that limits every retrospective psi claim, the report is shaped and selected after the outcome is already known, and second sight has additionally never generated the kind of large-scale, cross-culturally comparable case collection the SPR built for crisis apparitions in Phantasms of the Living and the Census of Hallucinations.
Folklorists today generally treat second sight as a valuable subject of cultural and religious-studies inquiry in its own right, illuminating how a community made sense of death, grief, and premonition, rather than as a claim to be adjudicated true or false by parapsychological method. No laboratory has attempted to test second sight directly, and it remains, on the evidence available, an unverified folk tradition rather than either a confirmed or a formally debunked psychic faculty.
