A film does not have to be the last word on the religion it borrows from, and The Serpent and the Rainbow was never treated that way by the community whose ceremonies gave it a setting. Nearly forty years after its 1988 release, a documentary called Black Zombie, examined by critic Courtney Small in POV Magazine on March 6, 2026, traced a pattern running from the 1932 film White Zombie through to Wes Craven's adaptation of Wade Davis's book, a pattern in which Haitian Vodou repeatedly supplied the villain rather than the subject. Small's account of the documentary's argument names Davis specifically. Despite having, in the documentary filmmaker Maya Annik Bedward's telling, set out to present Vodou as an important community building religion, Davis sold the rights to Hollywood, and the resulting film villainized Haitians throughout, according to the piece. Small further reports that Davis chose not to speak out publicly against how his research had been reshaped, a silence the article frames as financially convenient rather than accidental.
This atlas records both halves honestly. The film's own contemporary reviewer found real seriousness in its treatment of Vodou as religion rather than gimmick. A documentary made decades later, closer to the community the film drew from, found instead one more entry in a long line of horror built on Vodou's reputation rather than its practice, and a scholar who let it stand.
