The Card and Its Imagery

The Seven of Wands completes the Leo decans in the fire suit's zodiacal sequence, ruled by Mars and carrying the Golden Dawn title Valour, a title that fits Pamela Colman Smith's picture unusually well among the small cards: a man on higher ground, feet planted, defending his position with a raised staff against six others thrust up at him from below.

The detail most frequently discussed by readers is the figure's mismatched footwear, one boot differing from the other in most printings of the card, generally read as a sign of having been caught off guard or of improvising a defense rather than having prepared for one; Waite's own text does not comment on this directly, and the reading is a piece of accumulated practitioner tradition rather than an authorial gloss. No equivalent scene exists in the Marseille pattern, whose Seven of Wands is seven batons in a lattice, offering no figure, no higher ground and no adversaries to interpret.

The card is sometimes discussed alongside the Golden Dawn's broader treatment of the fire suit's fixed-sign decans, Leo, as concerned specifically with courage sustained under direct, personal pressure rather than fire's more expansive cardinal or mutable expressions; Mars's rulership reinforces the combative reading rather than complicating it, unlike several of the suit's less obviously matched planet-title pairings elsewhere in Book T. The Thoth deck keeps the title Valour and renders the seven wands as an angular, braced geometric composition, keeping the sense of a position held against pressure from multiple directions.
