Beyond the Temple: One of Hong Kong's Largest Welfare Networks

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Beyond administering Wong Tai Sin Temple, Sik Sik Yuen operates one of Hong Kong's largest networks of public welfare services: schools, free and low-cost Chinese and Western medicine clinics, and residential and community services for the elderly. Hong Kong's Social Welfare Department public register lists 620 subsidised residential care places across the five elderly-care homes Sik Sik Yuen sponsors: Ho Yam Care and Attention Home, 272 places; Ho On Home, 78; Ho Shin Home, 90; Ho Shing Home, 90; and Ho Cheung Home, 90, all serving elders aged 65 and over.

That figure covers only residential elderly care. Sik Sik Yuen separately operates free and low-cost medical clinics, schools and neighbourhood centres for senior citizens not counted in the 620-place total, so the government register understates the organization's full welfare footprint even as it documents the largest single piece of it.

The scale of that welfare network, built alongside a century-old temple founded by two Daoist priests in 1921, is part of why Sik Sik Yuen is described as one of Hong Kong's largest charitable organizations rather than simply a temple administrator.
