A Prayer Book That Named the Century It Was Written In

Rabbi Wolfe Kelman, vice president of the Rabbinical Assembly when Sim Shalom appeared in 1985, made a specific claim about what set it apart from prayer books that came before it: it was the first major siddur to incorporate the creation of the State of Israel as a theological reality and the Holocaust as a moral tragedy directly into its liturgy. That is a striking thing for a prayer book to do. Most liturgical texts inherit their core structure from centuries or millennia of prior use, revising details while leaving the deeper theological framework largely untouched.

Sim Shalom instead built room, within the liturgy itself, for two defining events of twentieth century Jewish history that no earlier standard siddur had directly addressed in its prayers. That was a specifically Conservative theological choice, reflecting the movement's own self understanding as a tradition that takes both halakhic continuity and historical reality seriously at once, rather than treating modern Jewish history as something liturgy should simply pass over in silence. Whatever else changed in the family of siddurim Sim Shalom later inspired, that willingness to let recent history speak inside the prayer book itself, rather than only outside it, traces directly back to Harlow's original 1985 editorial decisions.
