The Line Kukai's Own Transmission Drew

Shingon names its own teaching mikkyo, esoteric or secret teaching, and that name is not decoration, it describes how the tradition has always controlled access to its central practice. What Kukai's doctrine of buddhahood in this very body actually requires in application, the ritual identification of the practitioner's three mysteries with Mahavairocana's own, is conferred only through abhisheka, called kanjo in Japanese, an initiation given by a master to a disciple already prepared for it, never learned independently from a written text. Kukai himself received the full transmission in China from his own teacher, Huiguo, who by most accounts held many students but passed the complete esoteric lineage to Kukai alone before his death, a pattern of narrow, master to disciple transmission Kukai then carried into how he organized Shingon in Japan. What can honestly be reported here is the doctrine's argument and the shape of the institution that transmits it, not the content of the initiation itself, which the tradition has kept inside that master to disciple line for over a thousand years for reasons internal to how it understands the practice to work. That the line exists, and where it runs, is public history; what passes across it is not, and this entry does not attempt to cross that line on the tradition's behalf.
