From One Colonist's Conviction to a Baptist Church and a Constitutional Principle

Providence became a genuine experiment in what Williams's soul liberty actually meant in practice, a colony that welcomed religious dissenters of every kind, including Quakers and other groups persecuted elsewhere in New England, and that refused to establish any single church with state backing. Williams's own religious path continued evolving after founding the colony; he came to doubt aspects of the Puritanism he had left and, in 1639, helped establish what is generally recognized as the first Baptist church in North America, reflecting a Baptist emphasis on believer's baptism and voluntary church membership that fit naturally with his conviction that faith coerced by outside authority was not genuine faith at all. Rhode Island, the colony that grew out of Providence and Williams's other settlements, secured a royal charter in 1663 that formally protected liberty of conscience, making it one of the few colonies in British North America without an established church. Williams's writings, particularly his 1644 book The Bloudy Tenent of Persecution, argued the case for religious liberty at length and circulated well beyond Rhode Island's borders. Historians of American religious liberty generally trace a direct line from Williams's soul liberty through the later Baptist tradition's insistence on church-state separation to the First Amendment's religion clauses, though Williams himself acted a century before that constitutional language was written.
