A Century-Old Association Spending Almost Exactly What It Raises

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The Priory of England and the Islands, the charity that operates St John Ambulance, reported total income of 106,900,000 pounds sterling against total expenditure of 108,200,000 pounds sterling for the year ended 31 December 2024, a modest shortfall of 1.3 million pounds sterling on a budget of well over one hundred million.

The scale of that figure says something the founding history alone does not: a first-aid teaching association founded in 1877 to serve railway workers and miners in a handful of industrial districts now runs a national operation whose annual income exceeds one hundred million pounds sterling, funded through a mix of training fees, event cover contracts, grants and public donations rather than through church giving or government funding of the kind that sustains other charities described elsewhere in the atlas. A budget that size, spent almost exactly as fast as it comes in, describes an organization operating close to its means rather than banking large surpluses or running structural deficits, consistent with a service charity whose costs, uniformed volunteers, ambulances, training materials, first aid equipment, scale directly with the level of activity its income can support in any given year.
