That transmission has not simply ended: institutions such as the Government College of Architecture and Sculpture at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu now train sthapatis in a more formal academic setting, and contemporary sthapatis are regularly commissioned for new temple construction not only across India but for the substantial diaspora temple building programme underway in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia over recent decades. A sthapati today typically directs a team that includes several shilpis, the craftsmen who carve the actual stonework to the architect's specification, so the role continues to combine design authority with a genuinely collaborative, workshop based mode of production much as it did in the medieval temple building centuries the shastra texts originally codified. Some contemporary sthapati families can trace documented lineages back many generations, and that documented continuity is itself treated as a mark of authority within the profession, distinguishing an inherited guild credential from a purely academic architectural qualification.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnSthapati, Religious Roles & Titles Well-attested Source Divinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1SourcesDivinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1Comments (0)No comments yet.
