A Teenage Vision Grows Into a New Church in Seoul

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Sun Myung Moon was a Korean religious leader who, after reporting a vision of Jesus Christ in his teens, spent years developing a theology that blended Christian eschatology with Korean folk religious themes. He organized that theology institutionally in Seoul in 1954, founding the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, the organization the world would come to know as the Unification Church.

Central to his founding teaching was the claim that Jesus had been unable to complete his mission, establishing an ideal, sinless family, before his crucifixion cut that work short, and that a new messiah was therefore needed to finish what Jesus had begun. Moon's followers came to understand him and his wife, Hak Ja Han, as fulfilling that role together, honored within the movement as "True Parents" whose own marriage modeled the restored family the theology held Jesus had never been able to establish.

That founding claim, an incomplete first mission requiring a second messianic couple to finish it, gave the new church a theological identity distinct from mainstream Christianity even as it presented itself as its fulfillment, and it shaped every later development of the movement Moon built from that 1954 founding in Seoul.
