Fishing by Tangaroa's Nights: The Maramataka in Practice

Tangaroa's standing as actively venerated in a living tradition is kept, today, inside a calendar rather than a temple. The maramataka, the traditional Maori lunar calendar still consulted for planting, harvesting, fishing and hunting, names a cluster of nights after Tangaroa himself, typically falling in the waning gibbous phase after the full moon: Tangaroa a mua, Tangaroa a roto and Tangaroa kiokio are held to be among the best nights of the whole month for fishing and eeling, with ocean conditions and fish activity at their most favorable. The naming is not decorative; practitioners of the maramataka time real fishing trips to these nights specifically, treating the god's name as a working instruction rather than as a historical label. This is a different, and more precisely dated, form of the same standing already carried by the offering said before a canoe puts to sea. Where that karakia asks Tangaroa's favor at the moment of departure, the Tangaroa nights of the maramataka structure the calendar itself around him in advance, built into the ordinary rhythm of when Maori fishing is done at all rather than into a single ceremonial moment. Both practices are reported as continuing today, the calendar consulted anew every month rather than preserved as a closed historical system.
