Survival, Revival and Commercial Spread

The temazcal survived Spanish colonisation more intact than many other Mesoamerican ritual practices, in part because its practical health benefits gave it a use colonial authorities were less inclined to suppress outright than they were more overtly religious ceremonial forms, and it continued in indigenous and mestizo communities across the following centuries as a living tradition of household and community healing rather than as an archaeological curiosity.

The later twentieth and the twenty first century have seen a marked revival and, in parallel, a considerable commercialisation of the temazcal, as wellness tourism and the broader international interest in indigenous healing practices have brought the sweat bath into spa and retreat settings across Mexico and increasingly abroad, a spread that practitioners and scholars of Mesoamerican tradition view with some ambivalence, welcoming wider recognition of indigenous healing knowledge while raising concern about ceremonies conducted by practitioners without proper training or without the communal, spiritually grounded context the tradition understands the temazcal to require. Contemporary practice ranges accordingly from closely guided ceremonies led by trained temazcaleras and temazcaleros working within specific indigenous or curanderismo lineages to loosely adapted commercial wellness offerings that retain the structure's form while departing considerably from its traditional religious content.
