Which Pythagoras Came First, the Case Burkert Made

Walter Burkert's scholarship reoriented how the akousmata are read rather than simply cataloguing them. Earlier accounts had tended to treat the mathematikoi, the rationalist, mathematically minded wing later tradition preferred to remember, as the authentic core of Pythagoreanism and the akousmata's ritual prohibitions as primitive accretions embarrassing to a philosopher's reputation. Burkert argued the relationship runs the other way: the akousmata, with their taboos on stepping over yokes, stirring fires with knives and eating beans, are the older and better attested layer, closer to Pythagoras as a historical religious teacher operating inside archaic Greek taboo and purification culture, while the mathematical and cosmological Pythagoras of later philosophical memory is substantially a later idealization built by successors keen to claim him for a more prestigious, rationalist lineage.

That reordering changes what the akousmatikoi versus mathematikoi split actually represents. Rather than a dispute between genuine followers and a rationalist splinter group straying from the founder, Burkert's account makes the akousmatikoi the party staying closest to what Pythagoras himself is likely to have actually taught and practiced, while the mathematikoi represent the tradition being reshaped, generations later, into the figure Plato and Aristotle's own school found worth arguing with.
