A Story Without God's Name

The Book of Esther occupies an unusual place within the Hebrew Bible: it is the only book in the Jewish canon that never mentions God directly by name, a feature that has generated extensive theological reflection within Jewish tradition on themes of divine providence operating through ordinary human action and apparent coincidence rather than through open miracle, a reading many rabbinic commentators have developed at length.

Historians examining the book's claim to historical accuracy have found no independent Persian source corroborating its central figures or events, and several details, including the scale of the described massacre threat and its reversal, sit awkwardly against what is otherwise known about Achaemenid Persian administration and about Xerxes I's actual historical queen, Amestris, whose identity does not straightforwardly match Esther's biblical description. This has led a considerable body of modern scholarship to treat the book as a work of historical fiction, composed to explain and celebrate the Purim festival's origin, rather than as a strictly historical account, though the question remains debated and some scholars continue to argue for a historical core beneath the narrative's literary elaboration.

Purim, the festival the book establishes, remains one of the most widely and joyfully observed occasions in the modern Jewish calendar, marked by the public reading of the Book of Esther, costume wearing, charitable giving and festive meals, continuing a pattern of celebration the biblical text itself already describes being instituted at the story's close.
