The Vayus Outside Specialist Practice

The five vayus have remained a largely specialist concept, known well within Ayurvedic medicine and serious Hatha Yoga and pranayama instruction but rarely entering general English usage the way prana, chakra and kundalini have; where popular yoga writing does use the terms, Swami Satyananda Saraswati's widely read manual _Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha_ is one of the more common routes of transmission, presenting the vayus as practical targets for specific breathing techniques rather than purely theoretical anatomy. Scholarly translation of the classical Sanskrit sources, including Dominik Wujastyk's work on the Ayurvedic medical corpus and James Mallinson and Mark Singleton's Roots of Yoga, has done more to fix precise definitions of each vayu in English than any single popularizer, since older loose translations sometimes collapsed several vayus into one another or rendered them simply as generic winds.

The scheme has no equivalent test or refutation in the manner of the Western pseudoscientific claimants: it functions within Ayurveda's own diagnostic logic, where the proof offered is clinical and traditional rather than experimental, and it is presented here as that tradition describes it.
